Bare Branches

As I drive a snow-covered road through this old-growth forest, winding between towering trunks at twilight, I suddenly understand that the fretwork of bare branches is tree talk—the twists and turns of these limbs volitional as they stretch to greet one another or welcome the sky.

We are together, the trees sign against the dusk. We are one. And when their limbs can’t mingle above ground, their roots find one another.
