Reasonable Doubt

Here I am west of Nogales, where the wall gives way to a no-man’s-land of rugged hills and sparse vegetation. There are no paved roads. It is a hot and desolate country. I listen for the tinkling phrases of a five-striped sparrow, my target bird, when suddenly, a white border patrol SUV drives up. I explain my intention to the two agents. He should be ok the driver says to his sidekick, who nods half-heartedly and wants to know if I have a handgun.
